U.L. “Soupy” Conner was born and raised in Lordsburg, New Mexico and lettered three times in football and basketball at New Mexico State Teachers College.

Conner was the quarterback and running back for the football team for three seasons. Conner was co-captain of the football team his junior year, and in 1934, he brought in the play from Coach Ray Brancheau that defeated the University of New Mexico 6-0 with Tommy Cox going over the goal line from two yards out.

In 1935-1936, Conner was co-captain of the basketball team when New Mexico State Teachers College won the New Mexico Conference and went to the National AAU tournament in Denver, Colorado.

Conner was in Blue Key and was a business manager for the Mustang for three years. There were only 21 seniors in his graduating class.

Conner currently resides in Silver City.
