Dale Shock was born and raised in Syracuse, Indiana and arrived in Silver City in 1928 and graduated from the Normal School in 1933.

Shock was captain of the basketball team his first three years in college and the Sports Writers of New Mexico selected him as their All-State College forward for the same three years. Shock was playing coach his senior year and coached the basketball team for one year after graduating.

He lettered four years in basketball and one year in football. The football team record was 0-5 in 1928, the year Shock played. The college dropped football play that same year and did not play again until 1934 when Ray Brancheau arrived at Teachers College.

Shock was voted the most popular man on campus his sophomore year. He was also member of Blue Key (a former counterpart of Cardinal Key) and in his senior year was student body president and athletic reporter for the college yearbook.
