Charles "Chas" St. John is described by backfield mate, long time WNMU administrator and WNMU Athletic Hall of Fame member Nick Chintis as "a man's man and probably the best all-around natural athlete who ever attended Western."

A member of the 1936 football squad, which defeated the University of New Mexico, Chas was a four-year two-way starter.  Normally a half-back, his versatility and ability were such that he was called on to fill in where needed in both the backfield and line.

Chas was also gifted in baseball, golf, and track, which were played on the intramural level at that time.  Those that knew him say that had those sports been played on the intercollegiate level, Chas would have lettered and excelled in them also.

Chas continued his association with WNMU as a member of the Maintenance Department.  He passed away on September 4, 1988.
