PURPOSE
The intent and purpose of the Western New Mexico University Athletic Hall of Fame is to honor and preserve the memory of those athletes, coaches, and those who have contributed meritorious service to Western New Mexico University and its athletic programs.
SELECTION COMMITTEE
A selection committee shall be composed of the following individuals:
1. Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
2. Director of Alumni Affairs
3. Western New Mexico University Faculty Athletic Representative
4. Assistant Athletic Director of Media Relations
5. A current member of the athletic staff
6. An area sports news media representative
7. Alumnus of Western New Mexico University
8. Vice President for Student Affairs
The Director of Intercollegiate Athletics shall chair all meetings.
Choices of the Selection Committee shall go the President for his approval.
SELECTION PROCESS
Nominations for the Western New Mexico University Athletic Hall of Fame shall be presented in writing to the Selection Committee by any interested person at any time. The records of nominees shall be kept by the Director of Alumni Affairs from Year to Year.
The following categories for Hall of Fame nominees shall be viable for men and women:
1. Athlete
2. Coach
3. Team
4. Meritorious Service
An athletic team shall be eligible for induction as one inductee. The induction of a team shall not prohibit the separate induction of one or more its members. If a team is inducted, the selection Committee shall select a representative to accept the award.
Background information on the nominees shall be compiled by a designated representative of the Selection Committee.
There shall be no more than three inductees in any given year.
It need not be a requirement that a nominee from each representative category be selected.
Nominees may not be selected without at least 2/3 majority of the Selection Committee present.
All nominations not selected will be held for review for three years.
NOMINEE QUALIFICATIONS
If a nominee was an athlete, the person must have been out of school for at least seven years.
If a nominee was an athlete, the person must have graduated from WNMU.
If an athlete, the person must have earned two letters in one sport or one letter in two or more sports.
If a coach, the person must have been on the Western New Mexico University staff at least five years.
Consideration will be given for personal conduct in sports and personal contributions to the ideal of sports.
Criteria and qualifications will be based primarily upon the nominee's participation while attending or serving Western New Mexico University; however, accomplishments after leaving the University may be an important point of consideration.
Inductees shall attend an induction ceremony unless their presence has been waived by the Selection Committee and proxies selected to receive their awards. All inductees who are deceased or incapacitated shall be represented by individuals chosen by the Selection Committee.
