PURPOSE
The intent and purpose of the Western New Mexico University Athletic Hall of Fame is to honor and preserve the memory of those athletes, coaches, and those who have contributed distinguished service to Western New Mexico University and its athletic programs.
SELECTION COMMITTEE
A selection committee shall be composed of the following individuals:
1. Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
2. Associate Athletic Director
3. Faculty Athletic Representative
4. Director of Alumni Affairs
5. One (1) current Member of WNMU Athletics Staff
6. One (1) area sports news media representative
7. One (1) alumnus of Western New Mexico University
8. One (1) representative appointed by the Athletic Hall of Fame Selection Committee
The Director of Intercollegiate Athletics shall chair all meetings. Choices of the Selection Committee shall go the President for final approval.
SELECTION PROCESS
The following categories for Hall of Fame nominees shall be:
1. Athlete
2. Coach and/or Admin
3. Team
4. Mustang Pioneering Excellence Award
NOMINEE QUALIFICATIONS
Criteria for Selection of Athlete Category
- Each varsity student-athlete nominee must have finished his/her athletic career at Western New Mexico University at least five (5) or ten (10) years ago if the varsity student-athlete did not graduate from Western New Mexico University.
- Significant contributor in one or more sports.
- Each varsity student-athlete nominee must have demonstrated good citizenship both in school and after leaving Western New Mexico University.
Criteria for Selection of a Varsity Coach or Athletic Administrator to the Western New Mexico University Athletic Hall of Fame:
- Each varsity coach or athletic administrator who is nominated for the Wewtern New Mexico University Athletic Hall of Fame must be at least five (5) years removed from their coaching or administrative position at Western New Mexico University.
- The nominee may have served Western New Mexico Athletics as a varsity coach, administrator, trainer, or any other capacity that served to make contributions to the overall athletic program.
- Each varsity coach and administrator who is nominated must have demonstrated good citizenship both during their career and after leaving Western New Mexico University.
Criteria for Selection of a Varsity Team to the Western New Mexico University Athletic Hall of Fame:
- Each varsity team nominee must have finished Western New Mexico athletic participation a minimum of five (5) years.
- The varsity team nominee must have exceptional athletics performance of the entire team.
Criteria for Selection of an individual as a Mustang Pioneering Excellence to the Western New Mexico University Athletic Hall of Fame:
- The nominee has made outstanding contributions in the area of athletics to Western New Mexico University.
- Duration may vary, but contributions must be of substantial significance and demonstrated consistently over time.
- The nominee must exemplify great character and citizenship.
*Each nomination must be submitted online on the official Western New Mexico University Athletic Hall of Fame nomination form.
*To be indicted each nomination must receive votes from at least 60 percent of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee.
*Once nominated, each nominee remains on the Hall of Fame selection ballot for three (3) years.
*Special Achievement Citations may be awarded to those individuals who are not eligible for consideration to the Hall but who, by their efforts and support, are outstanding contributors to Western New Mexico Athletics.
*The Athletic Hall of Fame Selection Committee has the right to waive any criteria in the case of extraordinary circumstances.
*The Athletic Hall of Fame Selection Committee has the ability to put forth nominations
*An athletic team shall be eligible for induction as one inductee. The induction of a team shall not prohibit the separate induction of one or more its members. If a team is inducted, the selection Committee shall select a representative to accept the award.
Inductees shall attend an induction ceremony unless their presence has been waived by the Selection Committee and proxies selected to receive their awards. All inductees who are deceased or incapacitated shall be represented by individuals chosen by the Selection Committee.
