Athletic Training

The athletic training staff at Western New Mexico University (WNMU) are responsible for the delivery of health care to all student-athletes participating in sponsored WNMU athletic events. The WNMU athletic training staff will provide reasonable medical coverage for all student-athletes who compete in intercollegiate athletics. Each member of the athletic training staff will do his/her equal share to provide this service. They practice under the supervision of WNMU team physicians at Southwest Bone and Joint Institute.

The athletic training staff will operate within the guidelines outlined in the WNMU Athletic Training Policies and Procedures , WNMU Drug Testing Policy, Drug-Free Sport, the NCAA banned substance list, the NCAA Sports Medicine Handbook, and the NCAA Division II Manual.

Services provided include prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and illness sustained as a direct result of participating in practices and/or games. The program also provides educational opportunities for students interested in learning about and obtaining experience in a sports medicine environment.

SICKLE CELL TRAIT TESTING

As of August 1, 2022 the NCAA mandates that all Division II student-athletes be sickle cell solubility tested before they are permitted to practice, compete, take part in out-of-season training or try-out.

Student-athletes must show proof of medical documentation of being tested for sickle cell trait and the results of this test. (Test results can usually be found on the hospital records in which student-athlete was born). The NCAA no longer allows student athlete to sign a waiver.

INSURANCE

Dear WNMU Student-Athlete and Parents/Guardians,

Western New Mexico University Athletics (WNMU) provides secondary accident medical coverage for its student-athletes. All student-athletes, student athletic trainers, student-coaches, student-managers, practice players must provide evidence of insurance that includes coverage for athletically-related injuries. No student will be allowed to participate in any way until such evidence of current insurance coverage is on file with the WNMU Athletic Training staff. This policy is offered on an "excess" basis; therefore, the student-athlete needs primary insurance that covers them as a student-athlete in the State of New Mexico. Under the terms of our policy, WNMU is billed secondary to other valid and collectible medical insurance policies the student-athlete is affiliated with. If at any time after beginning athletic participation at WNMU your insurance changes, it is your responsibility to notify the athletic training staff immediately. If you drop your insurance, you will be responsible for all claims.

Therefore, WNMU will cover…

· Injury costs related to athletic participation, as long as:

* The injury occurred during a WNMU practice, game, training session, or team travel.

* The physician visits, diagnostic tests, etc., are arranged by the WNMU Athletic Training staff.

* The primary insurance company has been billed.

* The paperwork for the injury has been received by the Athletic Training staff within 60 days of the billing date.

And WNMU will not cover…

· Sickness-related costs (doctors visits, prescriptions, lab work, etc.).

· Injury costs occurring outside of the sport participation requirements (accidents, pick-up games, intramurals, etc.).

· Any physician visits or diagnostic tests not arranged by the WNMU Athletic Training staff regardless of athletic-related status.

· Prior injury or illness

· Charges that are declined by any or all insurances

· Late charges or charges associated with noncompliance or falsification of information

WNMU waives the responsibility of handling debt collection issues related to any medical bills returned to WNMU 60 days past the billing date.

It is the student-athletes responsibility to be sure his/her insurance works in the State of New Mexico.
