In 1939, Jim Fox graduated from Western New Mexico University with honors. While at WNMU, Fox was a standout football player and was named to the All-Conference team in 1938 as well as team captain.

As a student, Jim Fox was president of his junior and senior classes, and a member of Blue Key Honor Society and Kappa Delta Pi. He was also the business manager of the Mustang student newspaper.

From 1948-1967, Fox served as WNMU’s tack coach. His teams set and broke many conference records and won five consecutive conference championships. He also served as an assistant football coach for the Mustangs from 1948-1961, coaching both the offensive and defensive lines.
