Martha Wellborn Smith, Class of 1952, was a multi-talented athlete who was a first team player in softball, volleyball, and basketball for all four years of her collegiate career. She played in the first powder puff football game, held in 1950, and was president of the Women’s Athletic Association her senior year.

Smith was also associate editor for the 1950 and 1951 yearbook, elected secretary-treasurer of her junior class, a member of Kappa Delta Pi, and a career conference queen in 1951. She also found time to be a majorette for two years.

Smith continued her association with athletics as a girl’s physical education teacher and girl’s softball, volleyball, basketball, and track coach at Bayard Elementary School and the junior high school in Silver City.

Smith retired from teaching in 1987 and lives in Silver City, where she remains active as a golfer and president of the Board of Directors of the Copper Crest Country Club.
