Fred Byrd, Class of 1950, was a hard-nosed two way lineman, playing end for three years and tackle his senior year. He was a starter for four years, named most valuable player his sophomore year, served as co-captain for two years, and earned all-conference honors two years as an end. He also received honorable mention for the all-conference team as a tackle during his senior year. Byrd was elected student body president his senior year and also served as vice president of the “T” Club.

After graduation, Byrd went on to a successful high school coaching career in New Mexico. He guided the Gadsden High School football team to the New Mexico All-AAA State Championship in 1955 and won two district championships during a seven-year stint as head football coach at Cobre High School.

Byrd is retired and lives in Show Low, Arizona.
