Ed Heinsius attended Western New Mexico University from 1959 to 1963 and was a four-year letterman in both football and baseball.
As an offensive and defensive end on the football team, Heinsius led the team in sacks his freshman, junior, and senior years. He was awarded with all-conference recognition his sophomore, junior, and senior year. In his final season, he was the team’s co-captain along with J.D. Williams.
Heinsius also played shortstop and left field on the baseball team. With a four-year batting average of .390, his best year came straight out of high school. He was fourth in the nation in homeruns (8), 12th in runs batted in (27), and 27th in batting average (.391) his freshman year. For this he received Small College All-American honors.
Over his four years on the baseball field, he received all-conference recognition three years. He also received Scholastic All-Conference his junior and senior year and the High Scholastic Award, which was awarded to a WNMU student-athlete who competes in two major sports and has the highest grade point average.
Over his four years at Western New Mexico, Heinsius also was vice-president and president of the Letterman Club his junior and senior year and a Charter Member of the Society for Advancement of Management Club as a freshman.
Upon graduation, Heinsius entered the flooring industry and was an executive in that field his entire career. He received numerous awards for selling and achievement including the Highest Sales Award six years in a row at Armstrong World Industries and Top Sales Award at WF Taylor for five years. He is currently semi-retired and owns and operates an artificial grass and putting green business in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Heinsius continues to support Western New Mexico University through the Great Race and Homecoming.
He is married to Diane and together they have five children.
