Johnson coached the Mustang football team from 1950 to 1966 and the baseball team from 1955 through 1970. Johnson also served as athletic director from 1969 through 1981.

Johnson is the most successful football coach in number of victories at WNMU with 58. In the 1951-1952 season, the Mustangs were first in the nation in rushing with 379.2 yards per game and second in the nation of total offense yards with 465.3 yards per game.

As a baseball coach, Johnson recorded 155 victories with teb winning seasons. Johnson also served as a professor at WNMU for 35 years.
