Ralph Craig was born and raised in Lordsburg, New Mexico and entered New Mexico State Teachers College in 1948.

Craig letter fours years in football, and in 1949, he was voted Most Valuable Player. His junior year, in 1950, he was All-Conference and high point man. In his senior year, he was co-captain of the football team and voted Most Valuable Player again. He was also the leading ground gainer that year, running for 969 yards.

In track, he ran the quarter mile and on relay teams and lettered one year under Coach Jim Fox.

Craig was the vice president of his senior class and graduated with a major in physical education.

Craig is the only football player from WNMU to have his jersey, number 10, retired.
