Richards was awarded the Senior Academic Scholastic Award when he graduated from WNMU in 1962 with a major in physical education and sociology with a minor in safety education and physical science.

While at WNMU, Richards was a four-year letterman in track and cross country. In 1959, Richards was the Frontier Conference Champion in the 880 yard dash and became the record holder for that event for both WNMU and the Frontier Conference. A year later, Richards became the Frontier Conference Champion for the mile and two mile run. Richards was also a four-year qualifier to the national NAIA track and field meet in the 880 yard dash.
