Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Second Half Slump Leads to Western Loss

Silver City, N.M—Looking for a win, Western New Mexico men's basketball matched up with the Mustangs of Midwestern State on Drag's Court Thursday evening.

CJ Vanbeekum (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise) got the Mustangs going with the rebound and the basket. The teams continued to trade points, with JR Woodson at the foul line to tie the game at eight. An alley-oop by Leston Gordon (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago/Tunapuna Government Secondary) from Amarion Cash (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe) brought the fans to their feet, followed by a fast break from JR Woodson, giving way to a 12-10 lead.

Midway through the half, the teams were tied at 15. A three from Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air), gave way to 21-18 lead before a three from Midwestern tied it back up. The teams traded points throughout, each answering after the other. With four minutes to go, WNMU held a two-point advantage. Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) banked a three pushing the Western lead to seven with just under two minutes to play.

Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) came up big on defense putting the pressure on, causing two turnovers. Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) capitalized on one of the turnovers slamming it down. JR Woodson would take the other and drop it in for his fourth and fifth points, and the 43-32 lead in favor of Western New Mexico.

Scoreless through two minutes, and an 8-0 run by MSU saw the Western lead disappear with the game tied at 45.

A turnaround jumper from Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate), followed by a layup from Leston Gordon (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago/Tunapuna Government Secondary) kept the Mustangs within five.

Trailing 67-58 with just under eight minutes to play, the Mustangs needed a big run to close the gap. With MSU in foul trouble, WNMU needed to convert on offense, trailing 71-75 with just under two to play.

Midwestern outscored Western 49-35 in the second half to complete the comeback, and take home an 81-78 win.

Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) had a game high 21 points, going 10-17 from the field, while falling shy of a double-double with nine boards. Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) and Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) were the other players in double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Western will have a second chance Saturday against Cameron. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. on Drag's Court.
