Mustangs Can’t Combat Red-Hot Three-Pointing Shooting by Rams

SILVER CITY, N.M. – With the game pretty much even through the first 25 minutes, Angelo State University started to hit three-pointers and in bunches. The Rams hit 17 three-pointers, tying the most in a Lone Star Conference game this season, to help propel them past the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team Thursday night with a 92-73 victory.

ASU (13-4, 5-3 LSC) outscored WNMU (3-14, 0-9 LSC) 54-37 in the second half, in large part to an 11-16 effort from downtown. For the game, the Rams sunk 17 of 29 for a 59 percent clip from long range.

It wasn't just one player doing the damage, although Will Adler would have something to say about that as he couldn't miss from downtown making 7-9 for a game-high 21 points. He even made it a double-double with 10 rebounds. Four players made at least three, three-pointers, with Klair Crouch adding four treys for 16 points and six assists, Ja'Michael Brown and Daron Mims each connected on three, three-pointers for 18 points and 12 points respectively. Cole-Johnson didn't hit any three-pointers, but he reached double-figures with 11 points to give the Rams five on the night.

WNMU did their best to combat the three-pointer barrage as they shot well from the field making 29-65 (45), with sophomore CJ Vanbeekum (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise) leading the way with 12 points. Junior Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) added 11 points and junior Haneef Vaughn-Wilson (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution) with 10 points rounded out the three in double-figures. Enriquez grabbed a team-high six rebounds, he also tied junior Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) with three assists, while Vaughn-Wilson came away with four steals.

It was a nip-and-tuck first half with both teams not giving an inch. Junior Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) started the scoring 31 seconds in when he hit a jumper. The Mustangs had the lead out to three following back-to-back baskets by Vanbeekum, with the last coming off the fastbreak.

After trading leads, WNMU stretched the advantage to five at 16-11 on a layup by Vaughn-Wilson near the midway point of the first half. Still holding a four-point lead a few minutes later, ASU ripped off a quick 7-0 run to boost in front 22-19.

Neither team was able to create much separation the remainder of the half and after Enriquez closed the first half in style banking in a three-pointer, ASU was holding just a 38-36 lead at the break.

The Rams came out ready over the first few minutes of the second half going on 9-2 run to move the lead out to a 47-38 advantage two minutes in. WNMU answered the bell with Vaughn-Wilson hitting a jumper, sophomore Alex Gonzalez-Alvarez dialing long distance and McCray posting a jumper in the paint to give the Mustangs a 7-0 run to get back to within two at 47-45.

Just when it looked like WNMU was turning the corner, ASU decided it was a good time to start dialing up the three-pointers. Three of the next four trips down the floor resulted in three-pointers by ASU to push their lead out to 11.

The Mustangs kept trying to fight back against the three-point onslaught, as sophomore Tyshaun Copper (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Collegiate Prep School) and Vanbeekum helped combined for a pair of baskets to get to within 12. After another run by the Rams, senior Latrell Spivey (Phoenix, AZ/Westview) had the deficit back to 16, but that would be as close as they could get the remainder of the game. The Rams a couple of three-pointers down the stretch to outscore WNMU by three over the final few minutes to grab the victory.

While WNMU shot well from the field, they struggled from three hitting just 5-17 (29) and at the foul line making 10-19 (53). ASU went 33-61 (54) from the field and also went 9-15 (60) at the charity stripe.
WNMU held the edge on points off turnovers (21-10) and points in the paint (34-30), while ASU had the advantage in second-chance points (11-10), bench points (38-33) and fastbreak points (14-10).

WNMU will remain home this coming Saturday when they will host Texas A&M-Kingsville starting at 4 p.m. The Javelinas pulled out a 65-62 victory earlier today against Eastern New Mexico.
