Mustangs Force 22 Turnovers, Keep Things Close Against Texas A&M-Kingsville

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The defensive effort was evident from both teams Saturday afternoon as the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team forced 22 turnovers and held Texas A&M-Kingsville to just a 37 percent shooting clip. The only problem was, the Javelinas also kept the Mustang offense in check as they took the 64-47 Lone Star Conference victory.

WNMU (3-15, 0-9 LSC) held Texas A&M-Kingsville (11-8, 4-5 LSC) to a 37 percent shooting night (22-59) and did even better from beyond the arc in holding the Javelinas to a 23 percent clip (6-26). The only downside was the Javelinas also brought the defensive pressure and held the Mustangs in check. WNMU made just 14-52 (27) from the field, 3-18 (17) from three and struggled at the foul line making 16-27 (59). The Javelinas cashed in at the foul line making a solid 14-18 (78).

Five players scored at least six points, with junior Davis Wade (Jackson, MS/Will C Wood) leading the way with nine points. Juniors Haneef Vaughn-Wilson (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution) and Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) added eight points apiece. Senior Latrell Spivey (Phoenix, AZ/Westview) pulled down a team-high six rebounds and added six points. Vaughn-Wilson had two blocks and four assists, while tying with junior Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) with three steals apiece.

Eleven players scored at least two points for A&M-Kingsville with Trey Sumpter leading the way with 10 points. He also pulled down seven rebounds. Will West and Elton Dyer added nine points each.

Vaughn-Wilson opened the scoring for WNMU as he took a steal coast-to-coast for the fastbreak jumper. The Javelinas answered with a 5-0 run to move in front. The scoring pace certainly slowed down after that, as Vaughn-Wilson tallied another hoop before nearly five minutes in sophomore Alex Gonzalez-Alvarez drained a three-pointer to push WNMU back in front at 7-5.

A&M-Kingsville methodically went on a 9-0 run to move out to a 14-7 lead as they held the Mustangs without a basket for over five minutes. Enriquez snapped the run with two from the line near the midway point of the half.

The Javelinas stretched the lead to 10 with just a few minutes left in the half, just to watch the Mustangs make a fast push and a 5-0 run. Junior Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) hit a foul shot, McCray drilled a jumper and then Woodson ended the run with a jumper.

The teams traded points the remainder of the half to leave the Javelinas with a 28-20 lead at the break.

A&M-Kingsville started the second half on a 6-0 run to move out to a 34-20 lead. WNMU got on the board nearly five minutes in when Vaughn-Wilson hit two from the line.

WNMU made a couple of late pushed to get back to within 14, with the last coming at the 2:41 mark when Spivey collected an offensive rebound and put back. The Javelinas would outscore WNMU by three the remainder of the way to take the victory.

A&M-Kingsville led on points off turnovers (18-13), second-chance points (12-10), bench points (33-23), points in the paint (28-12) and fastbreak points (16-8).

WNMU will hit the road this coming week when they will play at UT Permian Basin on Thursday starting at 7:30 p.m. and then on Saturday at West Texas A&M starting at 4 p.m. Both start times are Central Time.
