DuPont, WA – The Western New Mexico University's men's golf team finished their final round of the 2021 NCAA D2 West/South Central Regional at the Home Course in DuPont, WA. The Mustangs would the regional (+24) and in 7th.Â
The Mustangs were in 3rd, shooting (+2) after Thursday's first round. WNMU had a tough second day on Friday being (+19) overall to end the round. Today, the Mustangs bounced back, playing very well, and were (+5). The Mustangs (+24) were 6 strokes behind from advancing.Â
Three Mustangs finish their WNMU career today but will leave behind a legacy for future WNMU golfers to come.
Harry O'Callaghan (Leeds, ENG/Priesthorpe HS), Sam Ruston (Birmingham, ENG/Chase Terrace Technology), and Lucas Hechler (Playa Del Carmen, MEX/Greg Norman Academy) finished their magnificent careers. O'Callaghan finished the regional T-21st after carding 72-77-73. O'Callaghan tops many WNMU records.
Ruston will go down as one of WNMU's best golfers in school history. Ruston finished (+9) shooting 72-78-75. Hechler played well his senior year and will leave his mark as well. Hechler finishes the regional (+12), carding 75-78-75.
Joey Geary (Phoenix, AZ/Sunnyslope HS) led the way for the Mustangs finishing the regional (+2), going 72-72-74. Geary gets a top 15 finish, finishing T-11th. Freshman, Adam Niles (Kamloops, BC/Valley View Secondary) had a great third round, going (-1). Niles's 74-78-71, (+7) for the week, places him T-26tth.
The top four teams advance to nationals. Texas A&M-Commerce finishes in first, being (+10). Saint Martins' stayed in 2nd, finishing the regional (+15). In 3rd, Sonoma State moved up two spots, finishing (+16). Making the 4th spot, Colorado-Pueblo, going (+18).
Thomas Jenkins of Sonoma State finishes on top of the field, carding 70-72-69, go enough to be (-5). In 2nd, Texas A&M-Commerce's Zach Burch shot (-4), shooting 73-69-70. Finishing in 3rd, Garrett Woodin from Montana State-Billings carded a (-3) for the regional, shooting 68-76-69.
Graduate Assistant and former WNMU golfer, John Gallegos concludes his time with the Mustangs as well.
The Mustangs finish an exceptional 2021 season and we thank the seniors for continuing to pave the way for future Mustangs. WNMU will be back on the courses in the Fall of 2021.
