What does it mean to be a Mustang?

The ultimate privilege. This to me is an opportunity to be part of something bigger than myself; to be part of a team, to become a small part of a large family and to compete at the championship end of NCAA Division 2 golf. Becoming a Mustang has given me a platform to utilize my strengths and an array of challenges to force me to develop my weaknesses. WNMU is shaping me to be more independent, more skillful, a better manager of my time and resources, a better friend and a leader. WNMU has taught me to challenge myself first and others to be better, to get more out of each day and to realize my own and their potential. I've made friends for life on and off the golf team and I get to live with them. This is a blessing in its own.

Individual success in golf is incredible and something I seek every single time I grip a club but winning as a team with WNMU on my clothes and above my name means more to me. Competing in the NCAA is something I have dreamt of doing for a long time, thanks to Coach Beatty. I know I will be doing all I can to win more tournaments and I know the team we have this year is made up of guys that are going to do the same. In many ways I am a product of coach and a few other ex-mustang golfers who I have met and worked with during my time here so far. Harry Wetton, Ross White and Calum Hill are three people specifically who have shown me how to make the most of my time here and their advice, example, general approach to life as a Mustang has been invaluable. This helps prove what it means to many of us WNMU golfers past and present to be a part of this program under Coach Beatty; that it develops people who can recognize their place in the program, recognize their successes and failures and be confident enough to use this to help younger people coming in to this team. It is an incredible feeling as a senior, to be able to try and pass these tips, and  give advice to the younger lads. Us three seniors on the team (Sam Ruston and Lucas Hechler) have explained what an incredible opportunity this is for them and that they should focus on controlling only what they can and what determines their overall success on and off the golf course.

The opportunity to be a Mustang is what you make of it and it is made clear that you're expected to be great. As a Mustang you are granted so many opportunities to be great. Coach has built this program to win golf tournaments and I aim to do just that with my brothers this year as I will leave behind a team that will continue to do so for years following.

How Has Coach Beatty Impacted You at WNMU?

Coach Beatty - An outstanding man and as a result a fantastic coach. A father figure away from home, which is important when home is 5,000+ miles away. Always honest and incorporating a life lesson in what he says and what he has us do as part of his golf team. He sets high expectations, where he challenges and pushes us to meet them. If we don't accomplish our goals, we get real close. He has helped me lose the 'too nice' part of me when I first arrived at WNMU in 2017. I now invest my time and effort in the people or things that are worthwhile, those who do the same for me and the things that add value to my day and life.

Truly, Coach Beatty is one of the most influential people in my life. I am and will be grateful for meeting and working with him for the rest of my life. The lessons, tips, advice I have received from him have helped get me to where I am today and will help me for my entire career inside and outside of the world of golf. He is a competitor who gives his best every day to leading our golf program and someone who plays to win, always! He epitomizes efficiency, class and the competitive nature. He invests time in understanding each player to give them the best chance of succeeding as a Mustang and teaches how to improve in all scenarios, communicating in the ways he knows players will understand and respond to.

I am forever proud to be a WNMU Mustang.
