St. George, UT – WNMU's men's golf team ended the 2018-19 season Saturday with a 10th place finish in the NCAA West-South Central Super Regional in St. George, UT. The Mustangs were in prime condition to land a spot in the NCAA finals with a strong round, but the putts didn't fall and the team faded from 4th place to 10th. Host Dixie State won the event and lead fellow qualifiers UC-San Diego, Cal. State Monterey Bay and Sonoma State to Daniels, WV for the final.
The Mustangs were led by Gonzalo Pan De Soraluce (Madrid, ES/Greg Norman Academy), who shot rounds of 69-74-73 to finish in 25th place in the 108-man field. Sam Ruston (Birmingham, ENG/Chase Terrace Technology) shot 78-69-72 to finish T42. Harry O'Callaghan (Leeds, ENG/Priesthorpe HS) finished T53 after going 72-72-77 while James Temple (Malahide, IRL/Malahide Community School) (75-71-77) and Pedro De La Vega (Toluca, MX/Colegio Argos) (75-78-73) rounded out the scoring to finish 77th and 82 respectively.
As a team, Western shot 291-286-295 (+8).
"I just considered this a learning experience for the guys. Pedro is the only one with experience at the regionals, and I'm glad they got to feel the heat of the kitchen before next year when we are hosting at NMSU," said WNMU Coach Kent Beatty.
"We had a great year this year as the kids proved they can beat lots of people week end and week out. We don't have a senior, so we'll have a whale of a team next Fall. I look forward to it already," said Beatty.
