Alcorta, Schmitz Lead Mustangs to 2nd on Day One of the PGA Works

West Palm Beach, FL. – The Western New Mexico University men's golf team finished up the opening round of the 2026 DII PGA Works Collegiate Championship in West Palm Beach, Florida and ended in 2nd of 6 teams. The Mustangs had an opening round of 299 (+15) to begin the 54 hole event at The Park at West Palm Beach.

Jacob Alcorta (Silver City/Silver HS) led the way for the Mustangs with an excellent opening round of 68 (-3) to finish the day tied for the lead. Alcorta would have a stellar 7 birdies on the opening day and will look to capitalize on a brilliant start. Jayden Schmitz (Oro Valley, AZ/Ironwood Ridge HS) was next for the Mustangs with a solid opening round of 72 (+1) to be tied 3rd. Schmitz would have 4 birdies on the opening day and will look to continue to move up.

Max Kaesebier (Bad Langensalza, Germany/Pierre-de-Coubertin Gymnasium) opened the tournament with a round of 77 (+6) to finish the day in T13th in the field of 30. Jonty Butcher (Barnsley, GB/Penistone Grammar School) started with an opening round of 82 (+11) which places him in 27th. Rounding out the lineup for the Mustangs, Elijah Salazar (Santa Fe, NM/Saint Michael's HS) would end the day with a round of 83 (+12) and is in T28th.

The Mustangs will begin the second round of the PGA Works Collegiate, tomorrow, May 5th at 08:00AM at The Park at West Palm Beach.
