Men's Basketball Fall to Lions on Senior Day

Silver City, N.M-- Looking to close out the season with a win, the Western New Mexico Men's Basketball team hosted Texas A&M- Commerce Saturday for the final game of the season. 

Hot out of the gates, WNMU took a 15-9 lead after three from CJ Vanbeekum (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise). Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate) then came up big with a layup, on top of drawing the foul to put the team up by nine. The lead moved to 11 after a jumper from Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll). 

Half way through the first the lead started to fade as the Lions went on a scoring run to tie the game at 39, eventually taking the lead on a dunk, followed by a three-pointer for a 44-39 edge going into the break. 

The second half was all Commerce as they continued to build on their lead. A foul by the Lions brought Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) to the free-throw line, draining both to cut the lead to nine. 

As time ran out, each of the five eligible seniors subbed out for the last time. 

Leston Gordon (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago/Tunapuna Government Secondary) led the team with 14 points, adding five rebounds. Woodson grabbed 11 boards of his own, on top of 10 points for a double-double. Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) added seven, Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) five, and Davis Wade (Jackson, MS/Will C Wood) with eight.
