San Antonio, TX – Western New Mexico's men's golf team gets into the meat of the season Monday as the squad faces top regional foes in the St. Mary's Rattler Invitational at Dominion Country Club in San Antonio. The Mustangs, currently ranked No. 25 in Division II, will get another look at No. 7 Oklahoma Christian as well as No. 12 St. Mary's, two of the top three teams in the South Central Region. The Mustangs are currently ranked fourth in the region in the 24-team region.
Other regional teams include Midwestern St., Texas A&M Commerce, Texas A&M International, Cameron, Dallas Baptist, Regis, Lubbock Christian, West Texas A&M, St. Edward's, and Arkansas Fort Smith. Non-region teams include University of Indianapolis, Southeastern Oklahoma St., Northeastern Oklahoma St., and Southwestern Oklahoma St which are all strong contenders in the Central Region for postseason play.
The Mustangs will field Gonzalo Pan De Soraluce (Madrid, ES/Greg Norman Academy), Sam Ruston (Birmingham, ENG/Chase Terrace Technology), James Temple (Malahide, IRL/Malahide Community School), Harry O'Callaghan (Leeds, ENG/Priesthorpe HS) and Pedro De La Vega (Toluca, MX/Colegio Argos) for the Rattler. Ruston and Temple both have wins under their belt this year as individuals and Pan De Soraluce boasts four top-10 finishes this season with an impressive .821 win-loss record. De La Vega finished 5th in this event in 2018.
Preparations have been tough for the San Antonio trip as cold temperatures and snow have hindered the practice schedule, so the Mustangs are looking forward to temperatures in the 60s on Monday and Tuesday.
