Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Last Minute Shots Not Enough to Fuel Mustangs Over Eastern

Silver City, N.M—It was an exciting game back for the Mustangs, as they took it down to the last seconds of the game against in-state rival Eastern New Mexico. Despite a last minute foul and a shot to tie the game, Western fell just short falling 78-80.

The first half was close, as the teams traded leads throughout. A 3-pointer by Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) got the Mustangs within one, before a last second dunk by the Greyhounds increased their lead to 34-31 going into the half.

The second half started slow for the Mustangs. A 3-pointer by the visitors gave them their biggest lead of the game at 51-40. Once again, Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) would come up with a huge three to cut into the lead. On an and-one brought CJ Vanbeekum (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise) to the free throw line, within one with less than a minute left to play.

A last minute foul drawn by Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) got him three opportunities to tie the game and send it into overtime. Falling just short, time ran out in favor of the Greyhounds.

Five Mustangs finished in double-digits, with CJ Vanbeekum (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise) at the helm with 13 points, hitting 5-of-6 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the line. JR Woodson and Leston Gordon (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago/Tunapuna Government Secondary) each finished with 12 points each, followed by Enriquez with 11 and Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate) with 10.

The Mustangs will have the tall task of taking on 13th ranked West Texas A&M Saturday at 4 p.m. on Drag's Court.
