Foul Trouble Leads to Mustangs Defeat

Silver City, N.M—In a non-conference matchup against Northern New Mexico, the Mustangs ran into foul trouble as the visiting Eagles took home a 87-79 win this evening.

Early on the Mustangs had the edge, taking a 21-9 lead nine minutes into the game. The Eagles offense caught fire as they made shot after shot to tie the game at 31 going into the half. Coming out of the half the Mustangs struggled offensively. A jumper by Amarion Cash (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe) brought the Mustangs within six at 37-43, only to have that lead increase by as much as 14 on Mustang fouls.

A foul by Northern brought CJ Vanbeekum (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise) to the line, connecting on both his free throws to bring the team within six. Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) connected in the paint, only to see the clock run out.

Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) led Western on 7-10 shooting and 5-9 from the free throw line to grab 19 points. Timothy Muniz (El Paso, TX/Canutillo) was the other Mustang in double-digits with 17 points, adding four rebounds. Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate) had a big night defensively grabbing seven steals, while Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) returned to play, adding 10 rebounds.

The Western men fall to 3-2 on the season, and will start conference play this weekend as the men and women travel to Odessa, Texas to take on UT- Permian Basin. The women are set to tip-off at 2 p.m. followed by the men at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8.
