McCray Reaches Milestone As Mustangs Blow Past Dustdevils

Laredo, TX-- In their first true road game of the season the the Western New Mexico Mustangs went into Laredo and came away with the win over hosts Texas A&M International Dustdevils.  It was also an important night for senior Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) as he joined the 1,000 point scoring club.

The game was close early on as the two teams exchanged the lead four times during the first half. The Mustangs held a 29-25 lead at the half, however, thanks to 11-22 (50%) shooting from the floor, and they would maintain that lead throughout the remainder of the game.

Western would put up even better offensive numbers in the second half going 13-23 (56.5%), while forcing 19 Dustdevil turnovers on the defensive end. The Mustangs would use that combination to extend their lead to as much as 15 points at the 3:13 mark. The Dustdevils would make a late run to cut into the lead but the strong Mustang defense would prove too tough as Western came away with the 70-62 win.

The Mustangs had four players in double figures. Senior Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) scored 15 points while juniors CJ Vanbeekum (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise) and Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) scored 11 apiece. Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) entered the night 10 points shy of 1,000 for his career, and he would proceed to lead all scorers with 21 points on 7-14 shooting including 3-7 from beyond the arc.

The Mustangs improve to 3-1 on the season and will be back in action one week from tonight when they host Northern New Mexico.
