Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brian Kortz

Early Start Not Enough for Mustangs at Aggies

LAWTON, Okla. – It was the start the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team was looking for as they moved out to an 11-point lead five minutes in. Still ahead at halftime, Cameron University turned it on midway through the second half and exploded for the 101-79 Lone Star Conference victory Saturday afternoon.

Senior Latrell Spivey (Phoenix, AZ/Westview) opened the scoring for WNMU (3-13, 0-7 LSC) 36 seconds in and then a pair of foul shots by sophomore Tyshaun Copper (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Collegiate Prep School) gave the Mustangs a 4-2 lead. Junior Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) helped start another run with a layup a few minutes later and after junior Davis Wade (Jackson, MS/Will C Wood) dialed up a three-pointer, Copper added two more from the line and a fastbreak jumper by McCray had WNMU out to a 15-4 lead at the 15:14 mark.

Junior Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) kept the advantage at eight a few minutes later when he connected on a jumper in the paint. Still holding a pair of four-point leads, Cameron (6-11, 2-6 LSC) fought back to reclaim the lead at 25-23 near the midway point of the half.

The Aggies moved the lead out to eight, but the Mustangs came fighting back. A 10-0 run started late in the half and after sophomore CJ Vanbeekum (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise) tied the game at 40, junior Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) closed the run with a layup to push WNMU to a 42-40 lead with 2:34 to play.

Sophomore Alex Gonzalez-Alvarez drilled a three to push the lead to four and after CU hit a jumper right before the end of the half, the Mustangs took a 48-46 lead into halftime.

The teams traded several small leads throughout the first six minutes of the second half when the Aggies pulled out to a five-point lead. Woodson and Enriquez accounted for the next three points to leave the deficit at two and after a mini run by the Aggies, Enriquez sunk two from the line near the midway point of the second stanza to pull the Mustangs to within six at 68-62.

That is when the Aggies went on a run to put the game out of reach. A Johann Tate three-pointer helped ignite an 11-0 run for a 79-62 lead with 8:05 to play in the game. The run ended up reaching a 22-1 spurt as the Aggies held a 90-63 late in the game on their way to grabbing the victory.

Enriquez led the Mustangs for the second straight night in scoring with 12 points, as he went 3-4 from the field, connecting on a pair of three-pointers. Wade and Woodson added 11 points apiece and junior Haneef Vaughn-Wilson (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution) rounded out the four in double-figures with 10 points. Woodson and Copper pulled down a team-high seven rebounds each. Copper also sent back a pair of blocks.

Zach Dumas had a big game for Cameron with 24 points. Delano Jones added 16, Tate with 14, JV Long with 12 and Jordan Lewis with 11. Jones was approaching a double-double with eight rebounds. Elish Benjamin sent back four blocks.

WNMU made 23-55 (42) from the field, 6-19 (32) from three and 27-38 (71) from the foul line. CU answered making 36-68 (53) from the field, 12-32 (38) from three and 17-25 (68) at the foul line. The Aggies held the edge on points off turnovers (17-12), second-chance points (10-7), bench points (66-40), points in the paint (40-26) and fastbreak points (18-11).

The Mustangs will return home this coming week when they will host Angelo State on Thursday night starting at 7:30 p.m. inside Drag's Court.
