Texans Use 10 Three-Pointers to Get Past Mustangs

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State University hit from downtown early and often, as they utilized 10 three-pointers and a 55 percent shooting percentage from the field to hold off the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team 85-59 Thursday night in Lone Star Conference action.

TSU (5-3, 2-1 LSC) connected on seven three-pointers in the first half alone and ended up going 10-25 (40) for the game. In addition, they added a 30-55 (55) effort from the field. WNMU (2-7, 0-3 LSC) started off slow from the field, but gain traction near the midway point of the opening half to shoot 21-59 (36) and 4-21 (19) from three. They went 13-21 (62) at the foul line, while the Texans also shot nearly the same from the charity stripe hitting 15-23 (65).

No player reached double-figures in scoring for the Mustangs, but seven players had at least six points and four went for at least eight points, led by nine from junior Haneef Vaughn-Wilson (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution). Juniors Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) and Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll), along with sophomore Trevin Ramirez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) added eight points apiece. Woodson pulled down a team-high six rebounds, Vaughn-Wilson dished out three assists, senior Latrell Spivey (Phoenix, AZ/Westview) sent back a pair of blocks and both Vaughn-Wilson and Spivey came away with three steals each.

Similar to the women's game, Tarleton State came out firing as they scored the first seven points of the game three minutes in. Woodson snapped the run with a layup. The Texans quickly built the lead into double-digits at 12-2 just over four minutes in.

WNMU cut into the deficit on a pair of occasions, with junior Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) completing a three-point-play to leave TSU in front by nine. Then a steal by Spivey ended up leading to a fastbreak layup from Vaughn-Wilson at the 10:34 mark and had WNMU to within eight at 25-17.

A Spivey layup a minute later kept WNMU to within nine when TSU took off the remainder of the half as they outscored the Mustangs 20-9 to open up a 48-28 lead at halftime. The Texans barely missed through the first 20 minutes as they shot 62 percent and held WNMU to a 38 percent clip.

Enriquez, Vaughn-Wilson and Woodson all collected baskets early in the second half to help pull the Mustangs to within 22 five minutes into the second half. That ended up being as close as they could get the rest of the way, as the Texans used a pair of runs over the remainder of the game to take the victory.

Corinthian Ramsey led four Texans in double-figures going for 26 points on 9-17 shooting. Josh Hawley added 16 points and a double-double with 11 rebounds, Deshawn Riddick added 12 points and a team-high eight assists, while Jaraan Lands rounded out the four in double-figures with 10 points. Hawley also sent back three blocks and both Ramsey and Nosa Ebomwonyi had three steals.

Outside of the strong shooting from the field and from three point range by the Texans, WNMU held the advantage on bench points (22-15) and were even on points in the paint (28-28). The teams were close on second-chance points with TSU holding the 10-9 edge, while also leading in points off turnovers (20-11) and fastbreak points (11-2).

The road trip will continue this Saturday as WNMU will play at Texas A&M-Commerce starting at 1 p.m. Central Time. The Lions fought off a valiant effort by Eastern New Mexico earlier this afternoon to remain undefeated at 8-0 after claiming the 85-78 victory.
