Woodson Posts Strong Game for Mustangs Against Lions

COMMERCE, Texas – Junior Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) did it all for the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team Saturday afternoon as he led the team with 18 points, pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and even added two steals and a block. The Mustangs made a run in the second half, but Texas A&M-Commerce made the plays down the stretch to take the 75-58 Lone Star Conference victory.

Woodson went 6-12 from the field and added a 6-7 effort from the foul line. Sophomore CJ Vanbeekum (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise) came off the bench to add nine points, sinking three three-pointers. Vanbeekum also tied Woodson in steals with two and grabbed five rebounds.

Texas A&M-Commerce (9-0, 4-0 LSC) currently receiving votes in the latest NABC Coaches Poll, used even point distribution and solid shooting from the field as they made 27-65 (42) from the field, 9-29 (31) from three and 12-18 (67) at the foul line. WNMU (2-8, 0-4 LSC) answered making 22-66 (33) from the field, 6-23 (26) from three and 8-13 (62) at the charity stripe.

Woodson started his big afternoon right away scoring the first points of the game a minute in when he connected on a jumper. The Lions answered in a big way, as they went on a 14-0 run over the next six minutes to take a 14-2 advantage.

The Mustangs got to within eight a pair of times of the remainder of the first half as a Woodson tip-in made it a 24-16 game and then Woodson hit two from the foul line to leave the Lions with a 26-18 lead.

They closed the first half just like they started the game, as they went on a 7-0 run to close the half and take a 33-18 lead into the break.

Sophomore Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) had WNMU off to a good start in the second stanza when he hit a three-pointer 14 seconds in to trim the deficit to 12. After a Woodson layup, junior Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) took over to help give WNMU a quick 6-0 run as he hit a jumper and a layup both in transition to bring WNMU back to within 12 at the 15:19 mark.

The Lions looked ready to put the game away, moving the lead out to 23 at 61-38 with nine minutes to play when WNMU made one last push. Vanbeekum started the rally with a three-pointer, sophomore Tyshaun Copper (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Collegiate Prep School) added a layup and Woodson then finished a three-point-play to cap off the 8-0 run to trim the deficit back to 15.

WNMU would get to within 14 a couple of more times down the stretch, but that would be as close as they would get. On both occasions, junior Davis Wade (Jackson, MS/Will C Wood) helped bring the Mustangs to within 14 before the Lions went on to take the win.

Texas A&M-Commerce had five players score at least nine points, led by 15 points from Reggie Reid. He also dished out a team-best five assists. Willie Rooks was right behind with 14 points. Srdan Budimir nearly had a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Budimir and Rooks came away with two steals apiece.

WNMU came close in a pair of categories with the Lions holding the small advantage on bench points (24-23) and points in the paint (28-22). The teams were tied in fastbreak points with eight apiece, while the Lions took the edge in points off turnovers (23-8) and second-chance points (17-9).

WNMU will now return home for the next three games, all non-conference affairs first against University of the Southwest on Tuesday starting at 6 p.m. and then against Arizona Christian at 6 p.m. on Wednesday night with both games taking place inside Drag's Court.
