McCray and Giron Score in Double-Figures to Keep Mustangs Close Against No. 8 Buffs

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Junior Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) and sophomore Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) each tallied 12 points, as the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team held a lead late in the first half and kept things close in the second half before No. 8 West Texas A&M pulled away for the 76-62 Lone Star Conference victory Thursday night in the conference opener for both teams.

McCray added a team-best seven rebounds to go along with his 12 points. Junior Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) also grabbed seven rebounds and tallied nine points. Giron was 4-9 from the field for his 12 points.
WT (7-0, 1-0 LSC) had several players that had big games with David Chavlovich scoring 25 points to lead five players in double-figures. Ryan Quaid had a monster night with 13 points, 20 rebounds and four blocks.

WT started the game on a 9-2 run over the first four minutes. Enriquez and junior O'Shayne Reid (Jamaica, NY/John Bowne) tallied the next three points for WNMU (2-5, 0-1 LSC) to pull back to within five. Still trailing 13-5, the Mustangs went on a 6-0 run to get back to within two. During the run Giron started the spurt with a free throw, Enriquez hit a layup and Giron dialed long distance.

Giron struck again a few minutes later as he drilled another three and McCray and junior Wade Davis added to that a layup and a three-pointer, with Davis' three giving WNMU their first lead of the game at 22-20 with 6:24 to play in the first half.

After the Buffs regained the lead, WNMU got back to within one twice on a layup by Giron and then another layup by junior Haneef Vaughn-Wilson (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution) with 3:09 to play leaving WT with the 29-28 advantage.
WT closed the final few minutes on a 10-4 run to take a 39-32 lead into halftime.

Senior Latrell Spivey (Phoenix, AZ/Westview) and McCray ignited the Mustangs out of the break, helping move WNMU to within five two minutes in. Each time it seemed like the Mustangs were gaining traction, the Buffs had an answer. They scored the next five points to once again lead by 10 at 46-36.

Trailing by 14 with 11:25 to play, the Mustangs made a couple of more runs to get back into the game. McCray scored four straight points and then Vaughn-Wilson capped off the 6-0 run with a fastbreak layup to leave the Buffs ahead by just eight at 60-52.

Following a pair from the line by WT, Reid hit a layup to again bring the Mustangs to within eight with 7:49 to play, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way. The Buffs went on a quick 5-0 run and later stretched it out to a 10-2 run on their way to claiming the victory.

WNMU ended up making 23-68 (34) from the field, 4-17 (24) from three and 12-23 (52) from the foul line. WT answered making 26-64 (41) from the field, 7-34 (21) from three and 17-23 (74) at the foul line.
WNMU used a strong advantage on bench points (26-13) and stayed even on points in the paint (34). WT held the edge on points off turnovers (11-6), second-chance points (11-4) and fastbreak points (9-4).

The Mustangs will remain at home this coming Saturday when they will face #18 UT Permian Basin starting at 4 p.m. The Falcons downed Eastern New Mexico 84-74 earlier tonight.
