CANYON, TEXAS – The Western New Mexico University men's and women's track & field teams concluded the 2026 outdoor season on Saturday at the final day of the Lone Star Conference Track and Field Championships in Canyon, Texas.
The Mustangs closed out the conference meet with competition in the javelin throw, shot put, and 5,000-meter run, highlighted by several strong finishes on the final day of action.
In the women's 5,000-meter run, Aubrey Lozoya (Albuquerque, NM/Cottonwood Classic Preparatory) earned a fifth-place finish after crossing the line in 18:47.76. On the men's side, Samuel Ketcham (Goodyear, AZ/Canyon View High School) placed 12th with a time of 15:29.54, while Cameron Shorty (Albuqurque, NM/Atrisco Heritage Academy High School) followed in 14th at 15:31.89.
Western New Mexico also turned in solid performances in the javelin throw events. For the women, Valeria Guerrero led the Mustangs with a ninth-place finish and a throw of 36.07 meters. Aubrey Pino (Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho High School) followed closely behind in 10th place with a mark of 35.56 meters, while Trinity Rios (Silver City, NM/Cobre High School) recorded a throw of 28.66 meters to place 15th.
In the men's javelin, George Peru (Silver City, NM/Cobre HS) posted a fourth-place finish with a throw of 53.25 meters. Diego Renteria (Animas, NM/Animas, HS) added a mark of 35.19 meters to finish 15th overall.
In the shot put events, Alexandra Gonzales placed 14th in the women's competition with a throw of 10.47 meters. Derek Schuller (Bayard, NM/Cobre High School) recorded a mark of 14.74 meters in the men's shot put to finish ninth overall.
The Lone Star Conference Championships marked the conclusion of the 2026 outdoor track and field season for the Mustangs.
