LA VERNE, CA – The Western New Mexico University men's and women's track & field teams turned in a strong distance-focused performance Thursday at the La Verne meet, highlighted by multiple top-five finishes and competitive marks in the 10,000 meters.
The Mustangs were led on the men's side by Cameron Shorty (Albuqurque, NM/Atrisco Heritage Academy High School) (Jr.), who delivered an outstanding race in the 10,000 meters, finishing third overall with a time of 31:53.38. His performance set the tone for WNMU, showcasing both endurance and race management against a competitive field.
Close behind, Samuel Ketcham (Goodyear, AZ/Canyon View High School) (Jr.) secured a fifth-place finish in the same event, crossing the line in 32:06.79. Ketcham's effort added valuable depth for the Mustangs, as the pair of top-five finishes highlighted WNMU's strength in long-distance events.
Jacob Corral (El Paso, TX/Americas HS) (So.) also contributed on the men's side, posting a time of 33:54.53 to finish 11th overall, rounding out a solid showing for the distance group.
On the women's side, Aubrey Lozoya (Albuquerque, NM/Cottonwood Classic Preparatory) (Sr.) led the way with a fourth-place finish in the 10,000 meters, clocking 37:47.08. Lozoya's performance placed her among the top competitors in the field and continued her consistent season as one of the Mustangs' top distance runners.
McKenna Sahd (Angel Fire, NM/Cimarron HS) (Jr.) added to the effort with a time of 41:40.68, finishing 12th overall and contributing to the team's presence in the event.
Overall, Western New Mexico demonstrated strong depth and competitiveness in the distance events, with multiple athletes earning top finishes and gaining valuable experience against a solid field.
