ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The Western New Mexico University men's and women's track & field teams delivered a well-rounded and competitive performance at the Don Kirby Tailwind Twilight, highlighted by a school record, multiple podium finishes, and strong marks across sprints, distance, and field events.
The Mustangs were led on the women's side by Aubrey Lozoya (Albuquerque, NM/Cottonwood Classic Preparatory) (Albuquerque, NM/Cottonwood Classic Preparatory) (Jr.), who continued her standout season with a first-place finish in the 3,000 meters. Lozoya crossed the line in 10:48.27 while also recording an altitude-converted school record time of 10:31.46, further cementing her place among the program's top distance runners.
Teammate McKenna Sahd (Angel Fire, NM/Cimarron HS) (Angel Fire, NM/Cimarron HS) (Jr.) delivered a strong performance as well, finishing second in 11:42.54, giving WNMU a 1-2 finish in the event. Vanessa Dominguez (Pecos, NM/Pecos High School) (Sr.) added depth with a fourth-place finish in 12:16.23, capping a dominant showing in the women's distance group.
In the middle-distance events, Isabella Medina (El Paso, TX/Americas High School) (Jr.) placed seventh in the 800 meters with a time of 2:46.33, while Jeanette Rivera (El Paso, TX/Young Women's Leadership Academy) (Jr.) led the Mustangs in the 1,500 meters, finishing ninth in 5:04.32. Sarah Romero (Rio Rancho, NM/Cleveland Sue HS) (Fr.) and Dominguez followed with times of 5:24.79 and 5:47.28, respectively.
The women's field events also saw strong results, led by Aubrey Pino (Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho High School) (Fr.), who secured a second-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 36.63 meters (120' 2"). Valerie Guerrero (Lordsburg, NM/Lordsburg High School) (Fr.) placed fourth with a mark of 36.44 meters (119' 7"), while Trinity Rios (Silver City, NM/Cobre High School) (So.) added a seventh-place finish. Alexandra Gonzales (Fr.) contributed in both the shot put and discus, recording marks of 9.53 meters and 33.11 meters to place sixth in each event.
On the men's side, the distance group turned in a strong collective effort in the 3,000 meters, led by Samuel Ketcham (Goodyear, AZ/Canyon View High School) (Goodyear, AZ/Canyon View HS) (Jr.), who finished eighth in 9:09.16. Cameron Shorty (Albuqurque, NM/Atrisco Heritage Academy High School) (Albuquerque, NM/Atrisco Heritage Academy HS) (Jr.) followed closely in 10th with a time of 9:14.86, while Morgan Haan (Albuquerque, NM/Edorado HS) (Fr.) and Jacob Corral (El Paso, TX/Americas HS) (So.) added times of 9:19.85 and 9:44.88, respectively.
In the field events, George Peru (Silver City, NM/Cobre HS) (Jr.) earned a third-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 47.42 meters (155' 7"), while Derek Schuller (Bayard, NM/Cobre High School) (Fr.) turned in one of the top performances of the meet for WNMU with a runner-up finish in the shot put, posting a mark of 15.34 meters (50' 4"). Schuller also added a fifth-place finish in the discus (37.25m), with Lukas Evans (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces HIgh School) (Fr.) placing seventh at 34.00 meters.
On the track, Jay Taylor (Anthony, TX/Canutillo High School) (Fr.) led the Mustangs in the sprints with a 10th-place finish in the 200 meters (22.15), while Diego Renteria (Animas, NM/Animas, HS) (So.) posted a time of 11.84 in the 100 meters and added a fourth-place finish in the javelin (31.39m). In the middle-distance events, Dax Rios (Las Cruces, NM/Centennial High School) (Sr.) placed eighth in the 800 meters (2:01.74), and Ameen Ibrahim (El Paso, TX/Pebble Hills HS) (Fr.) finished 11th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:14.98.
Overall, Western New Mexico showcased depth and versatility across all event groups, highlighted by Lozoya's record-setting performance, multiple top finishes in the field events, and a strong showing from the distance squads on both the men's and women's sides.
