CANYON, TEXAS - The Western New Mexico University men's and women's track and field teams opened competition at the LSC Track and Field Championships in Canyon, hosted by West Texas A&M University.
The women got the day started in the 1500-meter run, where Jeanette Rivera earned a spot in Saturday's finals after qualifying through the prelims with a time of 4:56.92 to place 12th overall. Sarah Romero also competed in the event, crossing the line in 5:18.42.
Both the men's and women's teams competed in the 10,000-meter run later in the evening. Aubrey Lozoya led the way for the Mustangs on the women's side, placing fourth overall with a time of 38:32.08 to earn five points. McKenna Sahd added a time of 43:14.39 in the event.
On the men's side, Cameron Shorty (Albuqurque, NM/Atrisco Heritage Academy High School) finished 10th with a mark of 32:22.76, while Samuel Ketcham (Goodyear, AZ/Canyon View High School) followed closely behind in 11th at 32:37.62. Jacob Corral (El Paso, TX/Americas HS) rounded out the Mustang competitors with a time of 34:14.92.
The Mustangs return to action tomorrow for day two of the conference championship meet. Several Mustangs will be competing on Friday consisting of the 3000 Steeplechase with Ameen Ibrahim (El Paso, TX/Pebble Hills HS), and Morgan Haan (Albuquerque, NM/Edorado HS). Lukas Evans (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces HIgh School), Derek Schuller (Bayard, NM/Cobre High School) and Alexandra Gonzalez will be competing in the Discus.
Shorty and Ketcham will both be competing on Saturday, running in the 5000-meter.
