CLAREMONT, CA – The Western New Mexico University men's and women's track & field teams continued their outdoor campaign with a strong showing in Claremont, California, highlighted by a wave of personal records and standout performances across distance and field events.
The Mustangs were led by a productive day in the distance events, particularly in the 5,000 meters. Cameron Shorty (Albuqurque, NM/Atrisco Heritage Academy High School) turned in one of the top performances of the meet, clocking a personal-record time of 14:59.84 to secure a second-place overall finish. He was followed by Morgan Haan (Albuquerque, NM/Edorado HS), who posted a personal-best 15:32.11, while Jacob Corral (El Paso, TX/Americas HS) added another PR with a time of 15:53.02. On the women's side, Aubrey Lozoya (Albuquerque, NM/Cottonwood Classic Preparatory) delivered a milestone performance, finishing in 17:40.03 to record both a personal record and a new school record while placing third overall. Jeanette Rivera (El Paso, TX/Young Women's Leadership Academy) also notched a personal best in the event, crossing in 19:04.24.
In the steeplechase, Ameen Ibrahim (El Paso, TX/Pebble Hills HS) continued his strong season with a personal-record time of 9:54.36 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, showing continued progression in the event.
Sprint performances were highlighted by Veronika Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Cienega High School) in the 200 meters, where she clocked a personal-best 27.83.
In the field events, the Mustangs saw additional improvements. Lukas Evans (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces HIgh School) recorded a personal-best mark of 37.52 meters in the discus, while Alexandra Gonzales followed with a PR throw of 33.91 meters. In the javelin, Trinity Rios (Silver City, NM/Cobre High School) added to the team's success with a personal-record mark of 28.73 meters.
Overall, Western New Mexico demonstrated continued development and depth, particularly within its distance group, as multiple athletes achieved new personal benchmarks and contributed to competitive finishes.
