Track and Field Continue Momentum with Standout Performances in Mesa

MESA, AZ - The Western New Mexico University men's and women's track & field teams delivered an impressive showing at the Carvel Jackson Memorial Showcase in Mesa, Arizona, highlighted by multiple personal records, several school records, and podium finishes across both track and field events.

The Mustangs were particularly dominant in the field events, led by George Peru (Silver City, NM/Cobre HS) (Silver City, NM/Cobre HS) in the javelin. Peru delivered a standout performance with a throw of 60.08 meters, setting both a personal record and a new school record while also achieving an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark and earning a third-place finish. Aubrey Pino () (Silver City, NM/Cobre HS) added to the momentum in the women's javelin with a throw of 39.89 meters, also marking a personal and school record performance while securing a third-place finish.

On the track, Aubrey Lozoya (Albuquerque, NM/Cottonwood Classic Preparatory) (Albuquerque, NM/Cottonwood Classical Preparatory) continued her strong season in the middle-distance events, recording a time of 4:46.65 in the 1,500 meters. The mark stands as both a personal record and a new school record, further cementing her role as a key contributor for the Mustangs.

In the throwing events, Derrick Schuller (Bayard, NM/Cobre HS) posted a strong performance in the shot put with a mark of 15.78 meters, earning both a personal record and a school record. In the vertical events, Naomi Kimble (Animas, NM/Animas, HS) (El Paso, TX) led the way in the high jump, clearing 1.63 meters to secure a first-place finish while also setting a personal and school record.

The Mustangs also saw a number of personal-best performances across distance events. Dax Rios (Las Cruces, NM/Centennial High School) (800m) clocked a time of 2:03.52, while Ameen Ibrahim (El Paso, TX/Pebble Hills HS) (1,500m) posted a 4:04.70. On the women's side, Sarah Romero (Rio Rancho, NM/Cleveland Sue HS) (1,500m) recorded a personal-best 5:05.53, and Morgan Haan (Albuquerque, NM/Edorado HS) (3,000m steeplechase) finished in 9:57.22. In the longer distances, Samuel Ketcham (Goodyear, AZ/Canyon View High School) (5,000m) turned in a time of 15:05.24 to earn a third-place finish alongside his personal record, while Jacob Corral (El Paso, TX/Americas HS) (16:01.13) and Jonah Cortez (Rio Rancho, NM/Cleveland Sue HS) (16:12.90) each recorded personal bests in the same event.

Overall, Western New Mexico showcased depth and continued progression across multiple event groups, with athletes consistently improving marks and contributing to a highly successful weekend.

Western New Mexico will look to carry that momentum into its next competition April 11 in Claremont California.
