Silver City has always more than just a hometown for Dr. Michelle A. Diaz. It is the foundation of her journey, her purpose, and her continued commitment to serving others.
Born in Grants, New Mexico, as Michelle A. Manning, she was raised in Silver City alongside her twin brother, where Michelle's roots in community run deep. A proud graduate of Silver High School's Class of 1996, she carried her passion for learning and leadership to Western New Mexico University, where she distinguished herself not only academically, but also as a student-athlete.
Competing in both collegiate basketball and softball, on the basketball court, she appeared in 78 games and recorded a total of 294 career points, while also contributing significantly as a playmaker and defender. In the softball field, she appeared in 66 games and held a .320 batting average with 66 hits 47 runs scored, and 261 RBI. Her time on both court and field reflected the same discipline, teamwork, and resilience that continue to define her professional and community leadership today.
At WNMU, she also served as a member of the Board of Regents — an early sign of her commitment to leadership and service. Dr. Diaz went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Zoology in 2001 before continuing her education at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Following the completion of her medical degree and residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at UNM Hospital, she made a deliberate and meaningful choice — to return home.
Today, Dr. Diaz serves as a board-certified OB/GYN at Cassie Health Center, providing essential care to women and families across Grant County and surrounding areas. Her dedication extends beyond the clinic, as she actively contributes to several committees at Gila Regional Medical Center, helping improve healthcare access and outcomes in the region she calls home. In a testament to her lifelong commitment to community and education, Dr. Diaz was appointed to the Silver Consolidated Schools Board of Education for District 4 in 2017, stepping into a leadership role during a time of transition within the district. Her decision to serve was rooted in both humility and responsibility.
As a parent, physician, and community leader, she brings a uniquely well-rounded perspective — one that bridges the needs of students, families, educators, and the broader community, and despite her already demanding schedule, Michelle made it clear that service remains a priority. Now serving as vice president of the board, Dr. Diaz continues to advocate for student wellness, academic success, and stronger connections between schools, families, and healthcare providers.
At home, Michelle and her husband, Raul — a retired educator and former football coach at Silver High School — are raising their two children in the same community that helped shape her. Whether through travel, sports, or shared family experiences, they remain deeply connected to the values of family and growth.
Dr. Michelle A. Diaz's journey is a powerful example of what it means to give back — to return to one's roots not just to live, but to lead, serve, and inspire.
Through her work in medicine, education, and community leadership, she continues to invest in the future of Silver City, ensuring that the next generation has the support, opportunities, and care they deserve.
