Western New Mexico University Athletics proudly recognizes Matt Enriquez as this week's Alumni of the Week, celebrating a Mustang whose story is deeply interwoven with the fabric of WNMU—past, present, and future. Known to many throughout Silver City and the Mustang community, Enriquez's journey reflects an enduring commitment to excellence, leadership, and service to the university he proudly calls home.
A native of El Paso, Texas, Enriquez arrived at Western New Mexico University in 2002 as a student-athlete with a competitive drive and a passion for basketball. Over the next four seasons from 2002 to 2006, he established himself as one of the most prolific and impactful players in the history of the Mustang men's basketball program. As a skilled scorer and perimeter threat, Enriquez finished his career with 1,591 points, cementing his place as the all-time leading scorer in WNMU men's basketball history, a record that remains untouched.
Beyond the statistics, Enriquez was known for his leadership, toughness, and basketball intelligence. He helped shape the identity of Mustang basketball during his era and earned the respect of teammates, coaches, and opponents alike. His contributions to the program were later formally recognized with his induction into the Western New Mexico University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015, an honor reserved for individuals who have left a lasting mark on Mustang Athletics.
After completing his playing career and earning his degree, Enriquez's connection to WNMU did not end—it evolved. He transitioned into coaching, returning to the Mustang program with a renewed purpose to guide the next generation of student-athletes. His rise through the coaching ranks culminated in 2016 when he was named Head Men's Basketball Coach. In that role, Enriquez emphasized holistic development, placing equal importance on academic achievement, personal growth, and competitive success. His leadership approach reflected his own experience as a student-athlete and reinforced the values central to the WNMU athletics mission.
Enriquez's professional path continued to expand beyond the court. In 2019, he was appointed Assistant Athletics Director for Internal Operations, marking a significant transition into athletic administration. In this role, he supported the internal functions of the department while assisting coaches, staff, and student-athletes across all sports. His institutional knowledge, operational focus, and collaborative leadership style quickly distinguished him as a trusted leader within the department.
Those same qualities ultimately led to his appointment as Interim Athletics Director, where he now oversees the entire Western New Mexico University Athletics program. His journey from student-athlete to head coach to senior administrator exemplifies WNMU's commitment to developing leaders from within and highlights the value of institutional continuity and lived experience.
The Enriquez family's impact on Western New Mexico University extends well beyond athletics. His wife, Jessica Enriquez, serves as WNMU's Director of Graduate Admissions and Outreach Programs. A proud alumna, Jessica holds multiple degrees from WNMU and brings more than two decades of experience across academic affairs, business affairs, and student services. Her dedication to guiding students through their educational journeys mirrors the family's shared belief in the transformative power of higher education.
Together, Matt and Jessica are raising their two daughters, Averi (12) and Allie (6), while continuing to contribute meaningfully to the Mustang community. Their story reflects service, loyalty, and a deep commitment to the mission of Western New Mexico University.
Few alumni embody the phrase "Once a Mustang, Always a Mustang" quite like Matt Enriquez. Whether remembered as a record-setting scorer, a mentor on the sideline, or a leader guiding the future of Mustang Athletics, he remains a powerful example of dedication to WNMU.
Western New Mexico University Athletics is proud to honor Matt Enriquez as Alumni of the Week and thanks him for his continued leadership, dedication, and lasting impact on the Mustang legacy.
Stay tuned for our next Alumni of the Week.
