Mustangs in Sixth after Day One in Montrose

Montrose, CO. – The Western New Mexico University men's golf team kicked off their season at the Bridges Golf & Country Club in Montrose, Colorado for the San Juan Intercollegiate. The Mustangs are currently in a tie for sixth place at (-6) after play was suspended due to lightning during the second round.

The Mustangs were in a tie for second place after a scorching first round (-13), 271. Leading the pack is Jacob Alcorta (Silver City/Silver HS), T-16th at (-2). Alcorta got off to a hot start with a bogey free 67 (-4) in the first round and followed this by opening up the second round with an eagle. Two Mustangs, Jayden Schmitz (Oro Valley, AZ/Ironwood Ridge HS) and Jonty Butcher (Barnsley, GB/Penistone Grammar School), are currently in T-19th at -1 for the tournament. Schmitz opened up with a solid 69 (-2) and managed a hole-out eagle on the 11th hole during round 2. Butcher played steady all day and managed two birdies on par-3s during the opening round.

Oscar Feschuk (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/St. Michael's College School) and Tyler Jackson (Deming, NM/Deming HS) are currently in a tie for 33rd place at (+1) and both opened up with excellent opening rounds. Feschuk posted a bogey-free 68 (-3) in the opening round and Jackson finished with a flurry of three birdies in a row to close out a brilliant 67 (-4).

Rounding out the Mustangs as an individual is Max Kaesebier (Bad Langensalza, Germany/Pierre-de-Coubertin Gymnasium), who is currently in 62nd place at (+19).

Colorado Mesa holds first at (-20), Cameron University is in second at (-17) followed by Colorado Mines at (-10) to round out the top three. Tied for first in the individual standings is Hayden Bowman of Lubbock Christian at (-11).

The Mustangs look to continue to build on their impressive first round as they continue their second round play tomorrow morning in Montrose.
