Final Results
Goodyear, AZ -- The WNMU women's golf team got their first taste of competition as they traveled to Goodyear for the annual RJGA Shootout at Estrella. Playing with just one senior, the youngish squad turned in a lukewarm 11th place out of the 16-team, 86-player event over a tough par 72 Golf Club of Estrella. Colorado Christian won the event by two shots over Lubbock Christian.
The Mustangs' rounds of 313-319 (+56) fell 22 shots short of Colorado Christian's 309-301 (+34). The top five teams were within four shots of the Cougars winning tally. CCU's Raya Schultz won the individual title with rounds of 75-69, two shots clear of LCU's Anaya Perales who went 73-73.
Western was led by
Alexandria Klemke (Goodyear, AZ/Estrella Foothills HS), who shot a pair of 76s to tie for 15th place.
Shandiin Harper (Farmington, NM/Piedra Vista HS) went 79-80, while
Falyn Lackey (Hobbs, NM/Hobbs HS) posted 85-81 and
Corynn Speer (Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo, HS) made her Mustang debut with 93-82. The Mustangs'
Kelly Peden (El Paso, TX/Eastwood HS) and
Erin Turner (Deming, NM/Deming HS) also got their first taste of the ring as individuals. Peden fired 79-80, while Turner went 85-84. Brooklyn Maes shot an excellent 73 in the opening round but was DQ'd Tuesday due to a scorecard error to tie for 86th.
The top five ladies will take a quick flight to Seattle on Wednesday to play in Saint Martins University's Bob Grisham Invitational at the famed Home Course in DuPont, WA.
Kelly Peden (El Paso, TX/Eastwood HS) and
Erin Turner (Deming, NM/Deming HS) will join the men's younglings in Ruidoso at the High Country Shootout on September 23-24.
