WNMU Honored As LSC Athletic Training Staff Of The Year

Athletic training staff at two Lone Star Conference institutions have been recognized by colleagues as the 2022-23 LSC Athletic Training Staff of the Year award recipients announced by the conference Monday (July 24).

Western New Mexico University claimed the award for a football-playing institution while St. Edward's University captured the award for an institution without football. The two athletic training staffs are each first-time recipients of the conference honor. This is the 19th year the Lone Star Conference awards have been presented.

"We are so proud of Terra and still astonished with what she was able to accomplish these last 2 years," said Athletic Director Scott Noble. "Her commitment to our student-athletes is unparalleled at all the college levels. I don't know of anyone else who would single handedly run an athletic training department, with 13 NCAA sports, as the only certified athletic trainer on staff. Her ability to organize her day, work with the many coaches and tend to all 251 athletes still is hard for me to understand. I am so thankful that there are others who took notice of this selfless servant. We are fortunate to have her."

WNMU Athletic Training services are led by Terra Dunlap, Senior Woman Administrator and Head Athletic Trainer. During the 2022-23 year she was assisted in coverage of the 13 Mustangs varsity athletics programs by students Breya Brown and Naya Garcia.

"What an honor to be selected by my peers for such a prestigious award!  I'm so thankful for the support from home and from my Mustang Family," said Head Athletic Trainer Terra Dunlap. "My work-study students, Breya Brown and Naya Garcia, were quick learners and hustled behind the scenes to keep the AT room running."

As well as being the Athletic Trainer for 13 sports, Dunlap also stepped up when needed in role the of Assistant Softball Coach. During the spring season while still being the athletic trainer for six sports other than softball, Dunlap would be instrumental in helping Softball Head Coach Ashley Hickman as her assistant coach for the entire season.

Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Amanda Martinez leads the athletic training operation at St. Edward's. In 2022-23 she was assisted by Abby Arrington and Shelby Stipp, and Ascension Outreach Athletic Trainer William DeCraene in coverage for 12 Hilltoppers varsity sport programs.

The LSC Athletic Training Staff of the Year awards are presented annually to the top institutions as voted by the head athletic trainer of each member school. Beginning in 2019-20, one award is presented to the staff of the year from a football-playing institution and an award given to the staff of the year from a non-football playing member.

The purpose of the LSC Athletic Training Staff of the Year award is to raise awareness of the athletic training profession. Criteria for the award includes hospitality toward visiting athletic trainers and teams; preparedness with supplies, equipment, and services for visiting athletic trainers and teams; preparedness for emergency situations; and care for injured athletes from visiting teams.
