PHOENIX, AZ - On Saturday, at the Grand Canyon University Classic, Western New Mexico University had their first track meet in nearly 35 years.
First were the women throwers on Friday as Freshman Selma Carrasco (El Paso, TX/Mountain View HS) finished 17th overall in Javelin, throwing 25.61m. Finishing in 19th Catherine SanMiguel (San Antonio, TX/Kaiserslautem HS) threw 24.27m.
Our Women's sprint team performed strong as Freshman Nayeli Cobos (Dexter, NM/Dexter HS) crossed the line at 12.93, leading the Mustangs with a 12th place finish.
The ladies distance team performed well with Freshman Gracey Lovato (Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho HS) placing 3rd in the Women's 5000m. She ran a time of 18:37.28.
In the women's 800m, four Mustangs placed in the top-25. Lindsey Green (Silver City, NM/Silver High School) finished in 13th (2:32.39), Isabella Medina (El Paso, TX/Americas High School) in 14th (2:33.41), Brenda Prieto (Las Cruces, NM/Mayfield HS) in 17th (2:38.15), and Glaydys Dominguez (2:58.20)
On the Men's side, leading the way in the 5000m, Sophomore Aaron Perez (El Paso, TX/Eastwood HS) finished with a huge 15:03.55, placing himself for 5th in the field. Three other Mustangs broke 16 minutes, with Sophomore Joshua Lara (Albuquerque, NM/Atrisco Heritage Academy High School) finishing 9th (15:26.61), Cody Hepker (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia HS) finishing 11th (15:32.30), and Ahren Thorson (Albuquerque, NM/) finishing 12th (15:42.63).
Making their track debut, sprinters James Hoban and Allen Ortiz ran the 100m. Hoban finished 28th with a time of 11.5 seconds. Ortiz finished 34th at 11.73 seconds.
The Mustangs look to race again on March 24-25 for the Willie Williams Invite, in Tucson, AZ, hosted by University of Arizona.
