Dallas, TX – The WNMU Men's golf team finished tied for third place Tuesday at the DBU Fall Classic. The 13-team event featured 90 players over three rounds at the par-70 Golf Club of Dallas. Host Dallas Baptist (+4) won the event, three shots clear of Midwestern State and seven in from of the Mustangs and Harding University (Ark), which were both 11-over par for the 54 holes.
The Mustangs were tied for the lead after Monday's opening 36 holes via spectacular rounds from Arnav Arkanath's (Milton Keyes, GB/Sir Henry Floyd HS) opening round 66, while Joey Geary (Phoenix, AZ/Sunnyslope HS) and Tomas Riberio blazed the course in 67 and 66 respectively in round two. Unfortunately, only Arkanath could repeat his heroics in the final round as he posted 69. The other Mustangs couldn't manage to break the par barrier in the closing round.
"I thought the guys should a lot of heart in the tournament by putting themselves on top on Monday, but Tuesday the breaks just didn't go our way," said Head Coach Kent Beatty. "It's hard to beat someone on their home course, so hats off to DBU for taking the title," said Beatty.
The Mustangs were led by Arkanath (65-73-69–207, good enough for a tie for fourth, while Geary finished 14th with rounds of 70-67-76. Always consistent Adam Niles (Kamloops, BC/Valley View Secondary HS) was one place back with a T15 finish after rounds of 71-72-71. Other scores included T39-Tomas Riberio (72-66-83) and 81st-Kyle Mahan (San Antonio, TX/Lady Bird Johnson HS) (78-79-79).
The Mustang are off for the rest of the Fall, but will return on February 13th for the Cactus Thaw in El Paso.
