Denver, CO – Finishing up their last match of the Colorado road trip, the Western New Mexico University Men's tennis team played Colorado Mesa. The Mustangs got a huge 5-2 victory over the Mavericks. 

"We had some really tight matches, splitting sets in four matches," said Assistant Head Coach Griffin Weinkam. 

The Mustangs came out on top with the doubles point No. 2 doubles team of Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) defeated their opponents 6-3. No 3. doubles duo Rodrigo Mere (Coatepeque, Guatamala/Colegio El Bosque) and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) secured the point winning 6-2. The No. 1 doubles team of Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC) played a good Mavericks team but were defeated 6-3.

In singles, Vega redeemed himself, winning 6-2, 6-2. Du had a strong match, defeating his opponent 6-1, 6-1. Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) and Lock had two thrilling matches. Feeding off each other's energy, Larrea and Lock went on to win their matches. Larrea lost the first sdt 6-4, but would win the next two 6-3, 6-2. Lock was ahead early, winning 6-2, but lost the second set 7-5. He would take the match in the third set winning 6-4.

"Brendan and Patricio really fed off each other. Brendan played with a lot of guts and it worked in his favor" concluded Weinkam.

Delpino and Romero split sets, making the match very interesting. Delpino was ahead winning the first set 7-5, but lost the next two sets 6-1, 6-2. After losing a close first set 7-5, Romero won the second set 6-1, before falling 6-3.

The Mustangs will be back on their home courts March 25th against Midwestern State at 12:00pm and Saturday, March 26th, at 1:00pm against Dallas Baptist.
