Silver City, N.M. – The Mustangs of Western New Mexico University women's golf team placed 3rd at the Southwest Minnesota State University Spring Invitational. Valerie Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Eastwood HS) played exceptionally well at the par 71, Wigwam Resort Blue Course.Â
The Mustangs started the day in second place, but Colorado Mesa snuck up and nabbed second playing 15 strokes better than the Mustangs on round two.
Three Mustangs cracked the top-10 to finish out the SMSU Spring Invitational..Enriquez was 4-over after day one and was 9-over today, good enough for 4th place (155). Taysea Powell (Artesia, NM/Artesia HS) carded a 78-80 (158), placing her T-7th. Chelsea Medina (Silver City, NM/Silver HS) had a great week, as she was in 15th after day one. Medina continued to play well, placing her in T-9th after shooting back-to-back 80s.
Amanda Portillo (El Paso, TX/Eastwood HS) shot 173, posting 86-83. She would go on to place T-26. Lexi Lucero (Ruidoso, NM/Ruidoso HS) played better on day two. Lucero carded 88-84 (172), placing her in 33rd.
Westminster College shot 612, taking home the crown. Whitney Banz and Cassie Campos of Westminster College were 1st and 2nd. Banz carded 71-74 (145) and Campos shot 76-75 for a total of 151.
The Lady Mustangs are playing in the Midwestern State Invitational (3/15-16), held at Wichita Falls Country Club.
