SILVER CITY, NM - The 2021 WNMU Tennis season has been highly anticipated, especially first year Head Coach Alex Hunt, and competition is within reach for the Mustangs to take the courts again. After the 2020 season was cut short due to COVID-19, the Mustangs have officially announced their schedule for the upcoming new season.

Getting only nine matches in the 2020 season before the pandemic hit, the Mustangs came on top against Arizona Christian University (5-2), Mesa Community College (6-1), and New Mexico Military Institute (5-2).

In March, it was announced Hunt was hired as the new Mustangs head coach. Graduate Assistant Annely Heinze was overseeing duties and was with the team in the 2020 Fall before graduating with her Masters. Hunt brought in Griffin Weinkam this January as Tennis's newest graduate assistant.

The Mustangs look to lean on team captains Johnathon Vega and Juila Tozzi. Vega is a freshman "who has already earned the respect of his peers" credits Hunt. "Julia is leader on and off the courts and will be a huge part of the women's development."

Focusing on 2021 schedule, let's take a look at what the upcoming dates will foresee. The Mustangs will be on the road for the first 14 dates. The first matches of the year will be against two NAIA schools, February 12, against Ottawa Arizona University and Arizona Christian University. RMAC school, Colorado Mesa University is in the Phoenix area and will meet up with Mustangs February 13.

WNMU continues to stay on the road the following weekend as Midland, TX, serves as a neutral site for the Mustangs, Seward County Community College and Air Force Academy. The Women will play SCCC and Air Force, as the men will just play SCCC.

Getting their Division I matches in, the Men will go to Flagstaff, AZ, playing a doubleheader against Northern Arizona University on Match 6.

After nearly a month of matches for the women and two weeks off for the men, the Mustangs will road trip to California, playing four Pac-West schools in three days. March 16, the Mustangs will battle against BIOLA, on the 17th they play a doubleheader against Concordia Irvine University and Point Loma Nazarene University, and on 18th, matchup against Azusa Pacific University.

Beginning Lone Star Conference play on back-to-back days, the women host Angelo State University and Texas A&M-Kingsville March 26 & 27.

 As for the Men, LSC play begins just a week later, as both Mustangs teams will play doubleheaders against two LSC foes and two non-conference matchups. April 2, the Mustangs will take on Dallas Baptist University in the morning and then play UT Dallas later that day. On the 3rd, it will be the tail of the two Mustangs facing off, as WNMU plays at Midwestern State University in the morning and then battling against Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Coming back home on the 10th and 11th, both teams will host UTPB and UT Tyler. Taking a pause from LSC play, on the 16th and 17th WNMU plays their last road matches against Schreiner University and Texas Lutheran.

The regular season is wrapped up at Silver City on April 23 & 24, with the Mustangs hosting University of Arkansas-Fort Smith and Cameron University.

The LSC Championship will be the weekend of April 30-May 1, as the location has yet to be determined.
