Mustangs pick up 17 Wins at UTPB Invitational

Odessa, TX- Mustang tennis teams hit the road to open their season up, earning 17 wins on weekend at the UTPB Invitational.

Head Coach Alex Hunt entered the invitational with the intention of playing as many matches as possible. "We played a ton of matches and played against some challenging opponents. All semester we've been competing within our own team out at practice, so every Mustang coming out with a win is very encouraging."

Two Mustangs went undefeated individually this weekend, freshman Jonathan Vega (6-3, 6-4; 7-5, 6-4; 6-3, 6-3) and senior Julia Tozzi (6-4, 6-3; 6-1, 6-3; 6-3, 6-4). Tozzi's third match was a huge step into her preparation, where she defeated nationally ranked #22 Kate Daugherty from Dallas Baptist University.

The men came out with 8 wins across singles and doubles this weekend. Rodrigo Mere and Jose Mota Neto grabbed a win in singles, and grabbed a win as partners in doubles. Vega and Jace Crawford teamed up going 2-1 in doubles play.

"I'm proud of how we carried ourselves. Our conditioning was obviously paying off. Our mental preparation brought us success."

The women had a strong weekend as they had 9 wins. Along with Tozzi, Massiel Paredes and Nicold Gonzalez picked up a singles win. Tozzi teamed up Kasja Gedlitschka going 2-1. Julia Terrazas and Gonzales partnered up splitting the weekend 1-1 and Paredes teamed up with Dallas Baptists' Ira Vogleman, going 1-1.

"This weekend gave us our first bit of insight into how we stand with two talented conference opponents. I look to keep growing in these areas to bring about even more success in October. We are going to put the work in to remove all doubt in ourselves" said Hunt

The Mustangs look to use the momentum gained from this weekend to compete at a high level at the LSC Championship, in Wichita Falls, Texas, for the men, and San Angelo, TX, for the women. The women's championship begins Friday, October 16th, and the men's begins Friday October 23rd.
