Vista, CA -- Western New Mexico's Men's golf team opened the Spring season with a solid effort this week in the rain-shortened Cal State San Marcos Fujikura Invitational. WNMU tied for fourth place among 15 teams. The Mustangs were paced by sophomore
Sam Ruston (Birmingham, ENG/Chase Terrace Technology), who was just one shot shy of making playoff for medalist honors to finish in third place individually in the 80-player field. The Mustangs fired rounds of 297-299-- 596, a total that was also managed by host CSU-San Marcos, and #21 Sonoma State. South Central region foe No. 9 Oklahoma Christian bested No. 8 Chico State to take the team title with a total of 583. UC San Diego was third.
The tournament was originally scheduled as a three-round, 54-hole event, but the 15 teams found the rare wet weekend in Southern California. Play couldn't be completed for Monday's 36-hole round the teams were sent back to the hotel with eight holes to play as the torrential rain made the par 72 Shadowridge Golf Club unplayable. The teams returned Tuesday morning to complete the second round, but again the weather wasn't cooperating, so the third round was scrapped.
The Mustangs' Ruston was just a whisker shy of capturing his second individual title of the season with rounds of 72-69--141. Had one more putt fallen, the talented junior would have been along side Chico State's Kelley Sullivan and Sonoma's Devin Gregg. Sullivan won the playoff on the 5th hole with a birdie.
WNMU's
Gonzalo Pan De Soraluce (Madrid, ES/Greg Norman Academy) finished T11 in the tournament with rounds of 72-75--147, followed by (T34)
James Temple (Malahide, IRL/Malahide Community School), 75-77, T49-
Harry O'Callaghan (Leeds, ENG/Priesthorpe HS), 78-77--155 and
Pedro De La Vega (Toluca, MX/Colegio Argos) 80-75--155; and T-67
Kailer Rundiks (Denver, CO/East HS), 80-79--159.
The Mustangs get back to work on Sunday as they host the Cactus Thaw at Lonestar Golf Club in El Paso.Â
