Men's and Women's Cross Country Take Top Spot at Mesa Classic

Mesa, AZ – The Western New Mexico University men's and women's cross country teams had a dominant performance at the Mesa Classic Saturday, as both finished first in their respective races. David Apodaca (Rio Rancho/Cleveland High School) took home first place on the men's side, while Brenda Prieto (Las Cruces, NM/Mayfield HS) took the top spot for the women.

The Mustang men finished with 29 points, behind with Apodaca leading the way with a time of 25.49.4. Teammates Daniel Beam (Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho HS) (25.49.7) and Michael Anzures (Seboyeta, NM/Grants) (27.06.1) finished closely behind in third and fourth place. Dorian Carrasco (Clint, TX/Clint) (10^th; 27:50.8) crossed fourth for the team, followed by Sebastian Mendoza (Socorro, TX/Socorro HS) (13^th; 28:06.6), Eduardo Ocon (Roswell, NM/Roswell) (27^th; 29:35.2), Roberto Ocon (32^nd; 30:37.2) and Austin Wulfe (Rio Rancho, NM/Cleveland HS) (31:46.1) rounded out the men's lineup.

In the women's 6k, Brenda Prieto (Las Cruces, NM/Mayfield HS) took home the top spot with a time of 18:52.6. Brenda Hernandez (Toluca, Mexico/Oatay) finished two spots behind at 19:07.1, followed by Britney Lovato (Rio Rancho, NM/Cleveland High School) in sixth with a time of 19:35.5 to round out the top three runners. Sophia Rodriguez (Tucson, AZ/Marana HS) crossed 8^th overall at 20:06.4. Janai Clayton (Santa Fe, NM/St. Michaels HS) (13^th; 20:38.4), Elizabeth Beltran (Los Lunas, NM/Valencia) (15^th; 21:20.0), Jazmine Vertrees (Safford, AZ/Safford High School) (18^th; 22:10.8), and Kayla Noriega (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) (22:26.8) fueled the Mustang lineup and their win in the classic.

Both teams will head to Riverside, California in a few weeks before returning home to host the Lone Star Conference Championships here in Silver City at the University Golf Course October 26^th.
