Spivey and Vanbeekum Each Score 10 Points at Texas A&M-Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Senior Latrell Spivey (Phoenix, AZ/Westview) and sophomore CJ Vanbeekum (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise) paced the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team Thursday night as each went for 10 points. Four players scored at least six points for the Mustangs and after pulling closer early in the second half, Texas A&M-Kingsville used a big push to pull away with the 80-40 Lone Star Conference victory.

Spivey went 3-8 from the field, a perfect 4-4 from the foul line and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Vanbeekum went 4-7 from the field, 2-4 from long range and added two assists and a steal. Juniors Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) and Haneef Vaughn-Wilson (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution) added six points apiece, while Vaughn-Wilson also had six rebounds.

Texas A&M-Kingsville (12-15, 5-12 LSC) ripped out to an 8-0 lead not even two minutes in. Enriquez finally broke the seal for WNMU (5-21, 2-15 LSC) when he drained a three-pointer at the 17:29 mark. Vaughn-Wilson brought the Mustangs to within three when he converted a jumper on the next trip down the floor.
Following a spurt by the Javelinas to jump the lead into double-digits, WNMU got back to within six a few times, with the last coming on a jumper by Spivey near the midway point of the half to leave Texas A&M-Kingsville with a 16-10 lead.

After that, the Javelinas jumped the lead out to 16 late in the half before Vanbeekum closed the first 20 minutes with a trey to leave the score at 35-22 at halftime.

The Mustangs used a 7-0 run near the midway point of the second half to pull back to within 12. During the run, Vanbeekum started things with a layup. Enriquez dialed long distance and junior Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) put in a layup to leave the Javelinas with a 45-33 lead.

Just when everything was looking good for WNMU, Texas A&M-Kingsville went on a 21-5 run over the next five-plus minutes to put the game out of reach.
Thirteen players registered at least two points for the Javelinas with Derrick Byrd leading the way with 15 points. Trey Sumpter added 11 and Caelan Neal rounded out the three in double-figures with 10 points. Jonnathan Lindsey led the way in rebounds with nine.

WNMU made 14-45 (31) from the field, 5-16 (31) from three and 7-12 (58) at the foul line. Texas A&M-Kingsville went 30-66 (46) from the field, 11-28 (39) from three and 9-13 (69) from the foul line. The Javelinas used points off turnovers (22-2), bench points (39-13) and points in the paint (32-14) to power their way to the victory.

WNMU will close out the 2017-18 season this Saturday when they will play at Angelo State starting at 4 p.m. Central Time.
