Tarleton State Downs Women’s Tennis in LSC Championships

ARLINGTON, Texas – Despite all three doubles being close, the Western New Mexico University women's tennis team wasn't able to secure a point and after Tarleton State tallied two singles wins, they were able to defeat the Lady Mustangs 5-0 in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Championships Friday.

WNMU (3-19) won four games in all three doubles, but just weren't able to get any closer. All three lost by scores of 8-4 with seniors Gemma Goodland (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia/Maribyrnong College Sports Academy)/Annely Heinze (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Techologico de Monterrey) at the top flight, redshirt junior Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado )/junior Jeanne Kolb (La Couroone, France/Lycée de l'Image et du Son ) at No. 2 and freshmen Nadia Justiniano (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Santa Cruz International School)/Emma Siboni (Boulogne-Billancourt, France/Lycée La Fontaine) at No. 3.

In singles, Kolb posted four games in her match at No. 4 before a 6-2, 6-2 loss and then Justiniano fell at No 5, 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the match for Tarleton State (11-9).

The TexAnns were ahead in the other four singles as well with Newell at the top flight and Siboni at No. 6 coming the closest to winning a first set as both lost 6-4. Siboni was even in her second set at two.

The loss in the LSC Tournament marks the end of the 2016-17 season for the Lady Mustangs. For seniors Goodland and Heinze they complete their careers with Goodland winning four singles matches and five for Heinze this year. In doubles the two played at the top flight all season and posted four wins, including one in conference.
