Ruston Paces Mustangs at WNMU Intercollegiate

Third Round Pairings


GOODYEAR, Ariz. –
Freshman Sam Ruston (Birmingham, ENG/Chase Terrace Technology) leads the charge, as the Western New Mexico University men's golf team is in 13th after the first two rounds of the WNMU Intercollegiate took place Monday at the par 72, 7,139-yard Golf Club of Estrella Course.

The Mustangs carded rounds of 291 and 295 for a 586 to sit in 13th, three-shots ahead of West Texas A&M in 14th and a shot back of Embry-Riddle (AZ) in 12th. Fort Lewis College's Matt Huntley leads on the individual side with a 134, a shot ahead of the field.

Ruston put together his best day as a Mustang, as he put together a two-under 70 to start the day, before coming back with a second round 75 for a 145 to tie for 29th. During the second round he tallied a pair of birdies on holes eight and 18. Sophomore Pedro De La Vega (Toluca, MX/Colegio Argos) was just a shot back in a tie for 34th with a 146. He had the reverse results of Ruston, as he opened with a 75 and then came back strong with a one-under 71 in the second round. He piled up three birdies, with one on hole eight and then back-to-back birdies on holes 15 and 16. Senior Ross White (Dollar, Scotland/Kinross HS) had similar scores of 73 and 74 for a 147 and is tied for 42nd. He added a pair of birdies on holes 11 and 18. Freshman Harry O'Callaghan (Leeds, ENG/Priesthorpe HS) opened up with the same score White did with a 73 and then came back with a 77 for a 150 to tie for 60th. He carded a birdie on hole 18. Rounding out the top-five for WNMU was sophomore Gonzalo Pan De Soraluce (Madrid, ES/Greg Norman Academy) who came back from a rough first round 87, to finish with a 75 for a 162 to sit in 100th.

Individually, freshman Lucas Hechler (Playa Del Carmen, MX/Greg Norman Academy) and sophomore John Gallegos (Rio Rancho, NM/V, Sue Cleveland HS) competed as individuals. Hechler is in a tie for 98th with scores of 81 and 80 for a 161, while Gallegos put together rounds of 78 and 89 for a 167 to land in 103rd.

As a team, WNMU shot 3.33 in par-three, 4.13 in par-four and 5.10 in par-five. They compiled the second-most pars with 118 and had 20 birdies.

Individually, Ruston and O'Callaghan led the team in par-three at 3.25, Ruston and White led in par-four at 4.00, while De La Vega led the way in par-five at 4.63. De La Vega had the most pars on the team with 26, White led in birdies with six and Hechler had the only eagle on the team.

The third and final round of the WNMU Intercollegiate will take place tomorrow (Tuesday) morning starting at 7:30 a.m. (Pacific Time). Live stats will once again be available here.
